Walt Reid To Be Inducted Into International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame

The International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) is proud to announce that Walt Reid, USA,  will be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame as a member of the  Class of 2018 during the IMSHOF Induction ceremonies in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday evening, September 28, 2018.

The induction will be held in conjunction with the United States Aquatic Sports convention.

When Walt Reid began attending USAS/USMS conventions in 1984, he volunteered to help tabulate USMS national records, and three years later, he became the Chair of the Records and Tabulation Committee. His initiation of officially recording the Short Course Meters Top Ten Times and Short Course Meters National Records led to his creation of a computer program for LMSCs to compile Top Ten Times that interfaced with his National Top Ten database. Keeping the national records quickly evolved into Reid’s expanded interest in international performances.

The formation of Masters Swimming International (MSI) in 1983 led to keeping data for swims and swimmers around the world. In 1987, Reid began compiling and publishing the MSI World Masters Top 10. Walt’s commitment to chronicling the performances of Masters swimmers globally was instrumental in making Masters a truly international endeavor and provided an invaluable resource for federations, national organizations and individual athletes.

In 1992, Reid became the official FINA Masters Recorder and developed the procedures, forms and computer programs for processing Masters world record applications and World Top 10 tabulations. He has served in this volunteer position, as the first and only FINA Masters Recorder, from 1992 to present.

Walt Reid will be inducted as part of a group of nine (9) outstanding individuals will be inducted at the IMSHOF’s annual ceremony. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront in conjunction with the 2018 United States Aquatic Sports XXXVIX Convention.

The prestigious IMSHOF class of 2018 includes four swimmers, two divers, one synchronized swimmer, one water polo player and one contributor, from five (5) different countries: the USA, Austria, Germany, Brazil and Japan:

Irmtraud Bohn To Be Inducted Into International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame

Irmtraud Bohn will be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018 during the IMSHOF Induction ceremonies in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday evening, September 28, 2018, to be held in conjunction with the United States Aquatic Sports convention.

Born in 1941, Irmtraud “Irmi” Bohn did not begin her career in diving until she was 15 years old.  She was a gymnast up until that time. During her teens, she would go to the local pool and swim for fun during the Summertime.  One summer the local diving coach spotted her playing around on the diving boards. Her talent was apparent. He asked her if she would consider joining his diving team.  She left gymnastics behind and became a diver.

She was named Austrian Champion on the 10-meter platform and in 1961, she won the Universidad Games.

Bohn competed in Olympic competition until the age of age 35.  She decided to retire when she began having children. During the ages of 35-45, Bohn did not compete, yet she always kept herself in good shape.   She was a PE teacher during that time, so her job helped her to stay in shape.

In 1988 Irmi Bohn began her career in Masters Diving.  It was really by word of mouth, that she first heard of Masters Diving.  Her good friends, IMSHOF Honor Diver Grete Kuegler, and others had heard about, so they started diving and training together once again.  

The first World Championships that Bohn travelled to was in 1988, in Brisbane, Australia, where she brought home a silver medal on the 10-meter platform.

Since then, she has competed in seven age groups (45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79). Bohn has participated in a record 15 FINA Masters World Championships, travelling all around the globe.  Bohn has won a total of 26 gold medals (1m-7, 3m- 9, 10m-10) and 12 silver medals (1m- 4, 3m- 3, 10m- 5). She also travels and competes in World Games Events. At the 1989 World Masters Games she won gold on platform, and silver on 1 and 3-meter springboard. She has set eight FINA world records in her career.

Bohn trains at the SU Moedling Swimming Club in Vienna.  She trains together with Grete Kugler, 2017 IMSHOF Honor Diver.  

Bohn says that to her, “Master diving means to me, stay fit and healthy, meet friends and spend time with them when we do our training and travel to championships. Now I am 77 years old and I am very proud, that I am still able to do all my difficult dives. My aim is, to take place in some more master championships in the next years.”

Bohn says that Masters Diving has taken away a once low point or bad memory in her diving career.  She had qualified for the 1960 Rome Olympics, but unfortunately, the Austrian Federation/officials did not register her in time so she did not get to compete.  As you can imagine, it was very disappointing and a very sad time for Bohn. She feels like she has made up for it during her Masters World Championships career and through all her gold medals.  

Bohn says her best experience in Masters Diving, would have to be at the World Championships in Montreal 2014, when she won three gold medals.  

Irmi Bohn is divorced, has two children, 48 and 49 and a beautiful Husky dog.  She lives outside Vienna but trains in Vienna. She is training and will go to the European Championships in Slovenia next month.

Hitomi Matsuda To Be Inducted Into International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame

The International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) is proud to announce that HitomiMatsuda,  will be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018 during the IMSHOF Induction ceremonies in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday evening, September 28, 2018.

The induction will be held in conjunction with the United States Aquatic Sports convention.

In the early ‘90s, Hitomi Maehara Matsuda was known as one the top young stars in Japan’s swimming program. She joined the national team in 1992 and at the 1993 FINA Short Course World Championships, Matsuda took silver in the 200m Breast and also placed 4th in the 200m IM . But after not getting elected for Japan’s 1996 Olympic team, she retired at the age of 19.

Matsuda returned to competitive swimming in 2003 because she realized how much she loved and missed it. This time, however, it was as a Masters swimmer.

Since 2004, Matsuda has been in the Top Ten every one of the 14 years she has competed. She has set 35 long course and 45 short course FINA Masters World Records in the I.M., freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke. In world rankings since 2004, she has a total of 176- number 1, 55- number 2 and 17- number 3 total world rankings in the I.M., freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke.

In an April 2013 feature, Swimming World Magazine named the Tokyo native one of the Top 12 World Masters Swimmers of the Year for 2012. The article noted that she had been a regular on the list (as a winner or runner-up) since 2005, missing out just once.

While competing in the 2014 (Barcelona) and 2017 (Budapest) FINA Masters World Championships, Matsuda brought home six gold medals and one silver. Over the years, she has garnered 80 FINA masters world records in the four different age groups, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 and 40-44 age groups.

Matsuda believes that Masters Swimming has many benefits. It keeps you healthy and it allows you to make new friendships, as well as keep in touch with many old friends in the swimming world. “ In 2014, at the FINA Masters World Championships, I met again many old friends and made many new friends.

81 Year Old Beth Carey To Be Inducted Into International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame

The International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) is proud to announce that Beth Carey, USA,  will be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018 during the IMSHOF Induction ceremonies in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday evening, September 28, 2018.

The induction will be held in conjunction with the United States Aquatic Sports convention.

Carey has been a member of the Ramapo (New York/New Jersey) Aqua Masters since the team’s inception.  Now in her 80’s, she began swimming with the team at age 45, and has competed in the U.S. Masters Nationals since 1983. In 1992, she made her first trip to a Masters World Championship, when it was held in Indianapolis, and earned her first two World Championship gold medals. She has competed in eight Fina Masters World Championships winning 20 medals.  She has also competed in Masters World Games, Pan Pacific Masters, Pan American Masters and Canadian National Championships.

Carey has been the Aqua Masters team representative since 1994 and has been active with the overall structure of USA Synchro’s Masters program, including being a Masters Athlete representative one year at the USAS Convention. When the team looked like it might not survive, Carey was the constant that kept the team going.

Carey swam water ballet with Cortland State Teacher’s College (now SUNY at Cortland) and was quoted as saying, “There is no comparison between the water ballet of my college years with synchronized swimming of today.”  Carey got a degree in Physical Education from Cortland State Teacher’s College in 1959 which is now SUNY (state university of New York) at Cortland. We had a water ballet club based on Esther Williams swimming.  She was elected to the Cortland College Hall of Fame in 2000 for swimming as a sport for life.  Beth also won the Mae McEwan Award in 2006, which is an award given to “Someone who has made Outstanding Contributions to and best exemplifies the spirit of Masters synchronized swimming.”

Continuing to swim as much as possible, she recently received a clean bill of health after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. She credits synchronized swimming for her good health and for giving her the energy she needs for her five children, 22 grandchildren and seven great-grands.

“Exercise,” Carey says, “is the most important thing as you age.” Now, at 81, she is still in fantastic shape. “I know that the swimming plus daily exercise is keeping me healthy as I am in my 80’s. My goal is to compete into my 90’s.”

Jurgen Schmidt To Be Inducted Into International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame

The International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF) is proud to announce that Jurgen Schmidt, USA,  will be inducted into the International Masters Swimming Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2018 during the IMSHOF Induction ceremonies in Jacksonville, Florida, Friday evening, September 28, 2018.

The Induction will be held in conjunction with the United States Aquatic Sports convention.

Schmidt has been ranked in the Top Ten for 43 years. He has competed in two FINA Masters World Championships,1988 and 2006, winning one gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Schmidt’s biggest change in competitive swimming came in 1973 when he read an article in the Chicago Tribune about an upcoming national long course meet at Circle Campus (University of IL) in August 1973.  Schmidt then joined the Ryall Masters.  He placed in the Top 5 in the 50-54 age group and swam against ISHOF Honoree Doc Counsilman in the 1500m freestyle.  He was hooked.   During the next few years he was involved with Paul Huntinger, Bobbi Turcotte and Frank Havlicek in forming the Illinois Masters and putting on swim meets.

Schmidt’s most memorable moment in Masters was winning the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle, plus swimming on the National Record setting 200m freestyle and 200m medley relays.  It took him five years to accomplish this and he did it at Brown University long course meet in 1978.

Another love of Schmidt are the open water and distance swims. One of the best was a six over 60 age relay, swimming from San Pedro, California to Catalina Island in September 1985.  Not only did they finish it but also set a new record in their age group.

In 1989 he moved to Lompoc, California to take care of his parents who were in their 90’s. During those years he never stopped competing and swam for various clubs. In Lompoc he started working out with his best friend, IMSHOF Honoree, Frank Piemme. They went to all the local meets and some Nationals Championships.

In 2013, Schmidt was a member of the 310 + relays, setting world records in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle; 200m medley, and 400m medley in L.C.M.  In 2015, he became a Speedo spokesman for “Fueled By Water”, a video on the internet as a 90-year-old swimmer.

Masters Swimming has been Schmidt’s life saver.  The camaraderie and many lifelong friends that he has made during his 43 years in Masters Swimming are things he will never forget. With the help of his fitness routine he continues to be a complete, healthy, happy person.  His attitude, compassion, and desire to swim another day has made it possible to lovingly care 24/7 for his wife, who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease.

In addition to honoring the IMSHOF Honorees, ISHOF will be recognizing Swimming World Magazine’s Top Ten Masters Swimmers from 2017.

Swimming World Magazine‘s Top Twelve Masters Swimmers for 2017 are: Men – Rick Colella (USA), Sergey Geybel (RUS), Nicolas Granger (FRA), Karl Hauter (GER), Willard Lamb (USA), and Darian Townsend (USA); Women – Noriko Inada (USA), Maurine Kornfeld (USA), Betty Lorenzi (USA), Karlyn Pipes (USA), Diann Uustal (USA), and Laura Val (USA).

The purpose of the IMSHOF is to promote a healthy lifestyle, lifelong fitness and participation in adult aquatic programs by recognizing the achievements of individuals who serve as an example for others.
